for Primary Forest Protection
Overview:
This is an opportunity to undertake applied economic research into tropical primary forest protection in three key countries or regions (Democratic Republic of Congo, Brazil, and Melanesia). This applied multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research project aims to promote protection of the world’s remaining tropical primary forests through improving the information base, developing policy options, and undertaking case studies. The successful applicant will use economic approaches to analyse the core drivers of primary forest loss/fragmentation and quantify values of, and preferences for, primary forest protection among forest-dwelling communities.
This is a fixed term (three years), full-time position based at Griffith University’s Nathan campus (Brisbane, Australia) however the successful applicant will also be required to work on other campuses of the University and undertake fieldwork.
The role:
Associate Professor Chris Fleming (Griffith University), Dr James Smart (Griffith University) and Dr Glenn Bush (Woods Hole Research Centre) are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the above research. The project will involve:
- A global systematic review and meta-analysis of the monetary value of ecosystem services derived from primary forests.
- A choice experiment / experimental economics analysis to elicit preferences and values associated with primary forest protection and climate change adaptation across all case study sites.
- A spatial econometric analysis of the key drivers and determinants of forest loss and forest fragmentation.
The successful applicant will work in a multidisciplinary team to gather primary data from forest-dwelling communities in remote and challenging locations. Any applicant must be prepared to travel to and engage with these communities.
The person:
The successful applicant must have a PhD or equivalent qualification/work experience in a relevant applied economics field (e.g. development economics, environmental economics, ecological economics). He or she must also have a demonstrated ability to conduct collaborative research in multidisciplinary teams, a high level of interpersonal skills and expertise in quantitative research methods and/or econometrics.
Salary range:
Research Fellow, Grade 1: AUD 70,744 – AUD 83,217 per annum. Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution: AUD 82,771 – AUD 97,364 per annum.
